New Pill got FDA Approval

A new Pill by Bayer, named Natazia, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April. The new pill offers four progestin/estrogen dosing combinations and is the first contraceptive containing the bio-identical synthetic estrogen estradiol valerate, rather than ethinyl estradiol. According to FDA, Natazia is the first four-phase oral contraceptive to be marketed in the USA. Natazial is already licensed in Europe and selling under the brand name Qlaira.

Ultrasound as Male Contraceptive

According to scientists of the University of North Carolina, ultrasound could work as a reversible contraceptive for men. If preliminary results are confirmed, applying therapeutic ultrasound to the testes for ten to fifteen minutes could be provide protection for up to six months. The scientists believe that ultrasound could provide men with a low-cost, non-hormonal contraception. The technique has been proven the in rats and trials will be extended to humans as early as next year. The findings so far suggest that sperm production can be halted temporarily without causing a longer-term reduction in fertility.

The Pill Turns 50 on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day marks the 50th anniversary of the birth-control pill in 1960 ushered in an era that many argue transformed the lives of women, giving birth to the sexual revolution, spawning the women’s liberation movement and changing the face of the once male-dominated workforce.

The pill also changed forever the relationship between the sexes by giving females ultimate control over avoiding an unwanted pregnancy. And for the first time, popping that little tablet each day meant women could engage in sexual pleasure on a whim without the unromantic foreplay of condoms, diaphragm or other contraceptive contraptions.

IPPF report ‘Contraceptives at a Crossroads’

ippflogo1IPPF recently launched a report entitled “Contraceptives at a Crossroads”. The report states that because of stalling on political and financial commitments hard won gains regarding contraceptive security in many parts of the world are at risk of being lost. The authors furthermore point out that the increasing demand for contraceptives, especially in developing countries, will not be met as long as the problems that prevent reproductive health supplies from being funded, developed, manufactured, and delivered to those who need them, are not understood. The aim of the report is “to synthesize the vast array of issues, structures, players and processes that impact whether women and men can access thereproductive health services that they need and want, when and where they need them, and to provide recommendations on moving forward“.
